i think its one thing to remain friends/keep them in your life with someone you've been close with for a long times and discovered that they have shitty opinions/they changed their minds but its another thing to be with/befriend someone knowingly what kind of person they were
true. and people are capable of tolerating/ignoring/coexisting with bad or wrong behaviors irl - there seems to be more tolerance for it irl, when you can see the whole person, than online.
i certainly don’t think anyone is obligated to befriend or be close to people who will harm them. again, i would certainly never fuck or befriend matty healy or someone who acted like him (i have in the distant past! not proud of it! glad i’ve learned from it!)
but i do think it is worth acknowledging that coexisting is often necessary. inevitably everyone is problematic, and we must appreciate that we are all born and raised in a society that teaches us bad shit. but we also all must learn when to drop people and when we can forgive, educate, or simply ignore the dumb ass shit they do.
